At 12:02 local time on March 19, the China US high level strategic dialogue officially ended. The Chinese delegation has left the venue and returned to the hotel by car. On the 18th and 19th local time, China and the United States held three talks. This is not only the first face-to-face meeting between China and the United States since the new US administration came into power, but also the first high-level contact between China and the United States after the first new year’s Eve call.
Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, and Wang Yi, State Councilor and foreign minister, were interviewed by the Chinese media.
Yang Jiechi said in an interview that this strategic communication is frank, constructive and beneficial. Of course, there are still some important differences between us. China will firmly safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests. China’s development and growth are irresistible. The two sides should handle Sino US relations in the spirit of no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, so as to make Sino US relations develop on a healthy and stable track.
Wang Yi said that China has come to dialogue with sincerity because dialogue is better than confrontation. However, the dialogue must be conducted in the spirit of mutual respect and seeking common ground while reserving differences. It is not allowed to unilaterally raise bills or prices. There are many concerns on both sides. There are some doubts that can be alleviated through dialogue. There are some long-standing problems that can be controlled through dialogue. We made it clear to the US side that the issue of sovereignty and territorial integrity is a major issue of principle. On these issues, the US side should not underestimate China’s determination to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests, and the will of the Chinese people to safeguard national dignity and legitimate rights and interests.
